The Building Service's Train-The-Trainer course is a comprehensive, official, directive driven course designed to enable students to provide building services personnel with the knowledge, skills, and abilities to perform their duties.

An intensive hands-on resident course using industrial components. Students study basic theory, learn to read the unique symbols and circuit diagrams, and how to safely handle adjustments and replacements in hydraulic and pneumatic sub-systems. Class days begin with a daily review, activities, and/or a question and answer session. Then students study at individual computer stations to learn new material in a self-paced CDROM format. Students may repeat areas of study as they see fit. Computer simulations, video tapes, reference books, and individual tutoring support the material. This course provides knowledge and understanding of the National Electrical Code as it applies to maintenance in the USPS.

Students will learn tools, tool safety, measuring device, technical drawings, gears, pulleys and bearings, power transmissions and leave the course with enhanced maintenance (for mechanics) knowledge, skills and abilities (KSAs).

Operation, maintenance, troubleshooting, and service on roof top units (RTUs). The proper day-to-day operation, lay-up and start-up procedures are presented for RTUs, special operation and maintenance considerations for condensers, evaporators, metering devices, economizers, controls and other specialized devices. System malfunction analysis procedures and techniques are presented. Safety and energy conservation are covered throughout the program. Methods of troubleshooting, unit electrical power, and control systems using electromechanical and solid state control are emphasized.

Instruction covers the theory, principles and practical applications of Airborne Ultrasound conforming to the American Society of Non-Destructive Testing (ASNT) for level 1 certification standards.

Instruction covers the operation and maintenance of smaller tonnage HVAC systems, including troubleshooting and repair of air conditioning and heating systems. Subjects include direct expansion systems, reciprocating compressors, electrical controls, and forced air and direct fired heating systems. Both preventive and corrective maintenance procedures are included with 50 percent of time devoted to classroom and 50 percent to lab, with special emphasis on energy conservation and safety.

The course applies the principles of electricity up to 480 volts, alternating current (AC), transformers, motors, motor controls, and wiring methods.
