Description

This hands-on course is designed to provide the skills needed to gain an understanding of standard LINUX applications, shell commands, and system utilities that are used for routine tasks including: installation, use and basic troubleshooting procedures - all of which are necessities to successfully administer the LINUX Operating System. Bourn Again Shell (BASH) programming is introduced to learners, who will be able to read, backup, restore and modify existing configuration files and shell scripts. This will also enable learners to create their own shell scripts which allows for efficient system administration. The X Window System (a.k.a. Graphical User Interface) is introduced from a user’s perspective, including configuration of the user’s environment (GNOME) and how to use several standard X Window System client utility programs such as OpenOffice (a free alternative to Microsoft Office, Firefox (a fast and secure web browser) and gnome-terminal (allows users to execute commands using a real Linux shell while still remaining on their graphical desktop).

 

 

Learning Outcome

 Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:

  • Install, configure and optimize a LINUX operating system and network settings.
  • Install, configure and update software applications and packages for a LINUX operating system.
  • Gain an understanding of how to navigate the LINUX filesystem using both the Command-Line Interface (CLI) and the Graphic-User Interface (GUI).
  • Become familiar with the most commonly used CLI commands.
  • Troubleshoot common LINUX issues using CLI and GUI tools.
  • Manage user accounts, permissions and passwords.
  • Control and monitor LINUX services.
  • Discover a wide array of free, open-source applications for use on LINUX operating systems.

 

Target Audience

Personnel that want a thorough understanding of how to install, maintain and troubleshoot the LINUX operating system. Anyone responsible for a LINUX network or will be incorporating LINUX into their current computer networks.

 

Course Completion Requirements

Passing this course requires the student to: attend all training days, participate in all required tasks and achieve a passing score of 70% on the final exam.
