Intro to Networks for Mgrs & Supervisors
Description
This course is designed for non-technical management personnel who must interact with technical staff. The course introduces the basic terms and functions of computer networks and networking equipment. Hands-on lab activities reinforce what is discussed in the classroom. Lectures discuss the flow of data/information from within a local area network to external wide area networks. Emphasis is placed on the resources required to adequately secure this communication/information. Practical examples are utilized to illustrate common network threats, including a case study of the ramifications of failing to secure network resources.
During this course, learners will:
• Define the basic components of a network and describe the function of each of these components
• Define the types of networks: Local area network (LAN) and Wide area network (WAN)
• Describe the various types of network data transmission technology: serial communications, broadband versus baseband, circuit switched and packet switched networks
• Define and discuss server based network and peer to peer network architectures
• Describe the basic function and operation of remote access including Virtual Private Network (VPN) and Remote desktop procedures
• Identify and measure the risks associated with network architecture of an organization
• Discuss the basic principles of securing information on a network
• Discuss the security vulnerabilities associated with web servers and e mail servers
• Define the following terms and describe how each is used to compromise a network: virus, worm, Trojan Horse and scum ware
• Discuss the forms of attacks and methods used to monitor a network for such attacks
Learning Outcome
Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:
- Improve communications between management and IT staff.
- Make better decisions about equipment purchases.
- Understand employee training needs.
