Environmental Control I: Basic HVAC



Description


Instruction covers the operation and maintenance of smaller tonnage HVAC systems, including troubleshooting and repair of air conditioning and heating systems.  Both preventive and corrective maintenance procedures are included with 50 percent of time devoted to classroom and 50 percent to lab, with special emphasis on energy conservation and safety.

 

Subjects include:

  • Direct expansion systems
  • Reciprocating compressors
  • Electrical controls
  • Forced air heating systems

 


Learning Outcome


Upon completion of this course the student will be able to:


  • Identify the components used in most residential and light commercial air-conditioning equipment.
  • Proper use of many tools used in troubleshooting air-conditioning equipment.
  • Develop a thorough understanding of the refrigeration cycle.
  • Properly install a refrigerant gauge manifold set.
  • Properly use a certified refrigerant recovery unit.
  • Properly evacuate air-conditioning and refrigeration equipment using a two-stage vacuum pump.
  • Use various methods for refrigerant charging for residential and light commercial equipment containing current and newer refrigerants.
  • Properly identify electrical faults using wiring diagrams.
  • Properly identify faulty capacitors.
  • Properly identify faulty compressors.
  • Properly use various methods for cleaning up after a severe compressor burnout.
  • Safely maintain, troubleshoot, and repair many air-conditioning systems, as well as natural gas heating systems.

Target Audience


  • This course is intended for mechanics, technicians, and maintenance supervisors who are assigned, or scheduled to be assigned to, operation and maintenance of HVAC equipment.

Course Completion Requirements


Successful completion of this course requires 112-hours of attendance, completion of all guided labs and achieving a 70% or greater score on the combined average of 3 lab tests and 3 written exams.

Pre-requisites


The following courses are recommended prerequisites: Industrial Electrical Service (Course #5568705), Introduction to Refrigeration and Air Conditioning (Course #5560303). Employees who complete this course and are expected to work on air conditioning equipment, must be certified by the EPA. NCED is licensed to administer the EPA test and certify air conditioning technicians. The EC I course ends on Thursday and the EPA Refrigerant Training & Certification course (5560300) is taught on the immediately following Friday.
